Why did North Carolina.....

....suffer such a high loss rate? I was reading ' Foxs Regimental Losses' and I noticed that in all categories losses suffered by North Carolina troops were higher than other states even losses to disease and I was wondering what the explanation could be. These are the figures quoted and include officers and enlisted men.
North Carolina
Total Killed....14,522
Died of Wounds....5,151
Died of Disease....20,602
Then the State with the next highest figure,
Mississippi
Total Killed....5,807
South Carolina
Died of Wounds....3,735
Virginia
Died of Disease....6,947
It's the great difference in losses from disease between North Carolina and the next highest, Virginia, that puzzles me most. Did North Carolina troops serve in theatres where there was a higher risk of disease?

It might have something to do with the very high number of Tar Heels in Confederate service.

Statistician/historians have shown that those numbers are inflated (at least in the case of North Carolina and preliminary studies indicate that Virginia's numbers are as well). North Carolina deaths seem to be around 34,000 instead of 40,000.

North Carolina and Virginia were the two leading producers of Confederate troops.
