Reverend Henry Ward Beecher gave an oration at the ceremony when the flag was raised again over Fort Sumter. I cannot locate it, but possibly....?

It might have been said by a Radical Republican or a rabid abolitionist. Someone who wanted history to remember what they said in the spirit of vengeance.

Benn Lossing wrote an extensive work on the Civil War. He was pro-northern completely, and received the pen that signed the EP from Lincoln, himself. I no longer have his three books, unfortunately. A very interesting perspective, nonetheless. Possibly....? It sounds like some historian's comment more than a verbatim quote, and it does ring a bell, here too.
