According to one of its enlisted soldiers, in May, 1864 at Cairo, Illinois the 68th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry was re-constituted to operate with the Army of the Tennessee. The regiment exchanged their Enfield rifles issued in late 1861 for "new Springfields." I wonder if those Springfields were model 1861 or model 1864? Does anyone have any specific or circumstantial evidence about my question?

No. Private Myron Loop kept a detailed diary during the ACW and published a ten part serialization of the 68th OVVI experience in the National Tribune. That material was the core of the book "The Long Road Home" edited by Richard A. Baumgartner and published by Blue Acorn Press.

It would have been anyone of several arms or a mix thereof. Contract made M1861, M1863, M1864 or Special Model M1861 as well as possibly repaired/reconditioned M1855. Knowing exactly which is almost impossible as the returns lump all four of the above arms in the same catagory along with the M1855.
