Hi All,

I'm sure this topic has been touched upon ad nausem, but since I'm new to the forums, I'll ask anyway  .

Specifically pertaining to Military Battles/Campaigns/Soldiers Experience(s) on the Eastern Front, What Author's/Book's should I begin with ?... Caveat: 1864 & 1865 only...

In depth Campaign/Battles would be preferable.

Regards & Thank You All in Advance!!

Fredericksburg I would HIGHLY recommend The Fredericksburg Campaign: Winter War on the Rappahannock by Francis O'Reilly. It is one of the best, if the the best book I have EVER read.

It's a novel, yes, but I thought Jeff Shaara's The Last Full Measure is an excellent intro to the personalities in the east during the war's last year.

Army of the Potomac21, you haven't stated how much you've already read on the subject, making me think that no matter how much you want to immerse yourself in details you'd do better having a firm foundation with which to work before getting lost in the proverbial Wilderness. (Pun definitely intended.) Your username suggests where your interest lies, so although it's an old (and classic!) work, I would recommend Bruce Catton's Army of the Potomac Trilogy, consisting of Mr. Lincoln's Army, Glory Road, and A Stillness at Appomattox. The first covers the Peninsula through Antietam; Glory Road is Fredericksburg through Gettysburg; and ... Appomattox is about 1864-65. The latter book won a Pulitzer Prize for history and can be read independently or first if you want to, as can the others.

Welcome to the forums!

Aussie Billy--Novel's are absolutely acceptable as well. I just finished Shaara's Gone for Soldiers. I am also very interested in Mr. Ralph's Peters as well...but have not read his current Cain at Gettysburg -----> The Damned of Petersburg Series...

James N. -- I just acquired Mr. Lincoln's Army. Haven't begun it yet. Bought this about 2 weeks ago. Thanks for the welcome!

How are Peter Cozzen's titles ?
