Excellent Photo ! My 5 x great-grandmother, Anna Sumter Land was the baby sister to Revolutionary War General Thomas "Gamecock" Sumter who the fort is named after.

One doesn't get a colorful nickname like "Gamecock" Sumter w/o some fantastic story behind it. Care to share?

I believe the British gave him the nickname, due to the fierce way his men fought them. He was a contemporary of Francis Marion. ( The Swamp Fox ) They actually couldn't stand each other. Their immediate superior, Light Horse Harry Lee, had to continually keep them separated. Following the war he was a leader in the founding of the State of South Carolina, serving them in the Congress and as Governor I believe. He lived to be almost 100. The University of South Carolina athletic teams are the " Gamecocks. " That is difficult for me, to point out, being related to the "Gamecock," and being a life-long Tennessee Volunteer. LOL !!!!!

Very nice photo and it gives me a very definite sense of place. Can you imagine the sound of that cannon firing in that confined, brick space?! Omigosh!
