Here is a picture (see Fig. 2.42). If this is the same lot as that below the 20th Maine Monument then I doubt the "Where is it" photo depicts that lot.

Devils Den looks correct. The wall is curved just like the one in the mystery photo.

Yup... good pic "cwbuff" Looks like that's it. Trees come and go. By the vehicles, the original pic looks like '30s/'40s.

Count the number or rows of stones at Devil's Den vs that in the modern photo. They are not the same. Unless the wall has been completely rebuilt, it is not that Devil's Den wall.

But if the wall was built on a bit of a slope, the lower elevation would have more rows. Facing the wall from the road, puts the "Where is it" photo on the right side of the wall, where the slope appears to be a bit lower in elevation.

I think if you expand the modern photo and look at the far end, you will see that the number of rows still don't match.

Here is the view looking the opposite direction (the same end of the wall in the mystery photo). I count 6 courses of stone on the right side in the photo below. I also count 6 (possibly 7) courses of stone in the mystery photo. But the mystery photo shows the downslope side of the wall, which may account for an additional course of stone. Also consider how many times as the pavement been resurfaced in the intervening decades that makes it higher on the stone wall? Given that this is a park wall, not a historic home, how many times has the wall been repaired making a stone by stone match difficult?

Look at the photo that cwbuff posted. There is a "filler row" inserted just below the top row. That "filler row" is not in the original photo. Maybe this wall was reworked. Notice that this "filler row" ends after about 6 feet.

The other thing about the original photo is that the end of the wall appears to have a slant to it. The end does not appear to be vertical whereas the modern wall appears to be vertical in cwbuff's picture.

The rock to the left of the tree in the original photo appear to be as high or higher than the wall in cwbuff's modern photo.

This might help with an analysis of the rear side of the stone wall. Also interesting to compare the rock and tree on the left side of Pam's photo to both the image in the GBD post and the modern Streetview images.

Here is a comparison of the the mystery photo next to the "Adelman" photo in the link from cwd22 in post #17. I tried to enhance the B&W mystery photo, but the reflected light has washed out the detail. So the best place to compare is the right edge of the wall in each photo. This is probably the best comparison without going to the site and taking a photo from the same angle.

Not the best weather today to climb Big Round Top and look for rock carvings.
