Its the Bryan barn on Cemetery ridge. A stone throw away from the 12th NJVI monument the unit my friends and I portray.

How they made it that far against a wall of fire, taxes my credulity. It was an amazing feat of will and courage.

The wall to the south of the Bryan barn was manned by the 12th NJ, who were armed with smoothbores, firing .69 caliber "buck and ball". It may have been the perfect weapon for a unit positioned less than 100 yards from the fences along the Emmitsburg Road.

The 11th MS was on the left of the brigade line. They suffered rom enfilading fire from the 8th OH and a group of men from the 125th and 126th NY, probably positioned about where the parking lot of Pickett's Buffet is located today. One account says that the flag of the 11th MS hung from its staff by a single corner, and was borne at that point by the fifth color bearer of the day.

Nevertheless, some of Joseph Davis's men made it across Emmitsburg Road. According to Stephen Sears, fourteen of them, including Lt. William Peel of the 11th Mississippi, took refuge behind the Bryan barn. Sears says that Peel intended to wait for reinforcements to come up, but upon realizing that such was not to be, and not wanting to be pointlessly shot in the back trying to escape, they surrendered. Thus, the war ended for this group of Mississippians. I sometimes wonder if they would have been surprised to learn the the land on which they surrendered was part of a 17 acre farm that was the property of a free black man.

The view from Hancock Ave. there at the farm is one of the best on the battlefield in my opinion. That long slope back towards the Confederate positions. You have an unobstructed view of the entire field from the south side of the town, across the field to the Confederate lines and the monuments to Virginia and North Carolina, all the way over to the Sherfy Farm and the Peach Orchard.

Well , what I understand AND have read is that the 12th NJVI had a few young men in the unit who liked to party. After a long day of it being a long day and attacking the Bliss barn they went to a local liquor store in town looking for a keg to wet the whistle of the roughly 400 men left in the unit. THEY somehow got the last known keg . It was NOT BUD, thank god . They some how were able to get it through rebel/traitor lines back within the friendly lines of the 12th and tapped that SOB . They were lucky someone in the unit had brought a tap from home and had carried it for almost a year up to that point feeling it might come in handy during the war. The last man up that night was given the job to dispose of the keg. It was decided to put it in a place where no one could fall over it and to keep the area trash free . Sooooo in the shed it went.
