From the hint, could it have been used as the center support for a bridge. I'm not sure where such a bridge could have been located. Maybe across Willoughby Run to the hotel that used to be there (Gettysburg Springs Hotel).

Once upon a time there was a footbridge across Rock Creek that allowed access to the Z. Taney Farm and Neill Avenue. Of course, the Z. Taney Farm (or at least the ruins of the farm) and Neill Avenue are still there, they are just hard to get to now. So, that does not exactly fit the clue. However, it might be part of the dam for McAllister's Mill. Both the dam and the mill are gone, so that would better fit the clue. I think we did this photo not too long ago.

Question for Pam and others concerning the old bridge over Willoughby Run to the Gettysburg Springs Hotel. Are those old bridge abutments still visible? From the engraving there was a horse drawn trolley. What was the route of the trolley as it crossed the battlefield?

I can't give you the whole route of the trolley without doing a little research, but I can tell you that part of it is still plainly visible and walkable. You can see the path from the Wheatfield through Rose Woods, and it continues across Brooke Avenue and along the southern base of Houck's Ridge before turning north near the base of Big Round Top. It's a great way to see the Confederate positions during their attack on Ward's Brigade on Day 2.

That makes sense. I wasn't thinking that it was part of the trolley system that ran over to Devil's Den/Big Round Top..

Actually, the Electric Trolley ran over to Devil's Den. The trolley to the Gettysburg Springs Hotel was a horse drawn trolley. These appear to be separate.
