If you look a bit higher up on this same plaque, you will see the name of Assistant Surgeon, Elias Bissell, Lora's husband. Lora is one of a very few women who have their name on a monument at Gettysburg.

Why was Lora included on the monument? Was she present post-battle as a nurse?

As I understand the tale, Lora Bissell wrote a poem entitled "Elsworth's Avengers", which as you probably know was the nickname of the 44th NY Volunteers. The men were so taken with the poem that it was adopted as the lyric for the regimental song. Lora was invited to become a daughter of the regiment, and she went along and served as a nurse (I believe in the brigade hospital). Elias Bissell was an Assistant Surgeon for the regiment. They are said to have married in 1864, about the time the regiment was due to muster out.
