When Irish immigrant Henry Sweeney decided to apply to serve as an officer in a newly organized African American regiment, he was taking a step that would determine the course of the next half-decade of his life, both during and after the Civil War. This article looks at the difficult path Sweeney had to follow to become one of the first officers to lead United States Colored Troops.
