Probably not during the period of the Articles of Confederation or the Constitution.
The country was just getting organized, the Native Americans were still active and the British were still out there.
Probably not during the George Washington presidency. The Father of the Country was not hesitant about using force to protect the nation.
Not during the Jefferson administration, he is adding the Louisiana purchase, and slave revolts were a thing back then.
Not during the War of 1812. Sure enough the British were hanging around.
Maybe during the Cherokee removal era, because the federal courts were backing the Cherokees. Not to worry, Andrew Jackson and Winfield Scott took care of those pesky indigenous tribes.
Now the founders are starting to die off, things are looking better.
During the Texas annexation era? No. Might need some help with a few federal regiments, in civilian clothes of course.
During the Mexican War? You have got to be kidding. Those Whigs are a gas. They practically fought the war for the South. :cannon:
What next? The South did not bag California, which entered the Union as one big state, a sort of free state counterpart to Texas. It was prior Mexican territory anyway, not much hope for slavery there, alas.
But then the South could not get enough voters to Kansas and local sovereignty looked like it put the section with more white people in the buggy driver's seat. The South was going to have to run twice as fast if they want to get ahead. :timebomb:
So after 1848, with Texas added to the U.S., but the outlook for more slave states looking cloudy, and slavery starting to fade in Delaware, Maryland and on the decline from west to east in Virginia, that might be a good time. They had gotten all the good land without adequate rainfall they were going to get. Nothing more to gain from being part of the U.S. and a lot to lose, in terms of "states' rights",, it was now or never in 1861.
As a bonus, the original baboon was likely to win the Presidency. The North will never fight for that guy.
Timing is everything. Pay no attention to that guy from Illinois, they can wrap this up in 90 days. :lee:
