This command (similar to Wade Hampton's Scouts) first notably existed during the Atlanta Campaign, under Captain Alexander M. Shannon of the 8th Texas Cavalry. Shannon later was promoted to major and colonel, commanding the same body during the Carolinas Campaign. However, I've now found evidence that such a command existed since July, 1863. OR V23P2 pages 717, 722, and 960 reference a "Scout Company" sometimes known as the "Wharton Scouts" reporting directly to Wheeler, under Captain M[arcus]. L. Gordon (also of the 8th Texas Cavalry).
Does anyone know of information on Captain Gordon or the existence of such a scout company during 1863-4?
