Another way in which woman could support the war effort. Notice the caveat in Point Two, which would leave a lot to personal interpretation.

Almost at the poorest they had manner of dress, composure, deportment that exells us. Although we not always want to behave properly, we still have too. To be period kinda?

Oh, reading some era newspapers can put a dent in our image of how much stricter were social codes- arrest reports speak of woman-on-woman brawls and other er, uncivil nehaviour. At least it was frowned on!

Boy, great article although touches on something that frequently flattens me. Have to say luxurious watering holes like Saratoga Springs and Niagara Falls resorts did a brisk business, shopping seems to have not slowed down ( at least in Northern cities ) a scrap and judging by Godey's and Demorest's magazines ' fashion ' remained a paramount concern through the war. I'm always a little baffled that with a war on all this seems to not have slowed down. Nice to think a few ' women of the United States ' committed to discarding luxuries.

Southern women were dealing with a blockade although those few who still could afford it came up this way to shop. Yes, I can source that. Wish I could remember which Lee wedding saw the bride in NYC for her trousseau.
