Was on the barrel of a cobbled together, junk Quaker gun, half fake parts, half real, that I bought a decade ago for fun at an antique store. I never figured out what this particular piece was, anyone? Perhaps a sight protector?

Yes, that is a front sight protector. If you loosen the knurled portion, it slips off the muzzle end and you can use the front sights. Lots of people who skirmish use those to protect the "tall" front sights often used.

I've managed to knock the front sight off a reproduction musket twice, so I've got one like now...
Thanks. I assume they are all modern pieces for repro guns and not original, or would that assumption make an a__ out of me?

As a rule, I think these are modern additions. On the other hand, I'm not sure how front sights were protected in the past? I'd have to look at the "golden age" of marksmanship as a popular sport when muzzle-loaders gave way to cartridge breech loaders. For now, I'd think it was a modern addition to your old gun.

I see you are in Mobile, AL. I was through there not too long ago, looking at the old forts and drinking some excellent beer on the opposite side of the bay! Fascinating part of the country. Good luck with your new rifle!
