Recent Find What is this shell fragment??

I recently acquired this shell and was looking for more info. The fragment has two holes and approximately 5 3/4" across. I hope someone can shed some light on this shell.

Looks to me to probably be a Confederate 24 lb. case shot with a side-loading hole. Others better educated will no-doubt be along soon.

At 5.8 inch it is a 24lber and may well be a side loader. Are there any threads on the half hole?

Yep. Confederate 24 lb case shot - side loaded. It's Confederate because they were the only side to use the side-loading method.

Do you have any information about where this was found ?

Unfortunately I have no info on any location. The previous owner recently passed away and the family doesn't know any details. He was a collector here in Hampton Roads Virginia.

Well, 24 pounders weren't generally field pieces as they were too heavy to easily transport and maneuver (but there are exceptions of course). So, the most probable thing would have been for this to have been fired from a fortified position or brought up as a siege piece. Nice relic.
