What is The Lost Cause?

I keep seeing this phrase but never a concise definition, or even a windy rambling dissertation as to what it is, except that it isn't the right of some people to keep other people in perpetual slavery.

So come on folks, help a fellow out. What is the Cause that was lost? And why would anybody want it back?
