What IS that?

The gentleman in this picture is a park ranger/historical interpreter. The folks in this picture are visitors to the park. I've always kind of wondered what the little white thing behind him that looks like it's sitting up in the grass listening is. I showed the picture to another ranger the next morning and asked what she thought it was and she said "It's a reflection," but I've never quite been able to puzzle out what was being reflected, or why doesn't look like it's flat against the ground, the way a shadows are.

Any thoughts?

This one's for you, @NH Civil War Gal!

Just a guess but since the image is a bit blurry it was probably a slow shutter speed . If so the object could be a flying insect reflecting off the lantern light .
For what it's worth, it was taken with my cell phone, so the shutter speed wasn't fiddled with; it's likely blurry because it was a winter (December) event and I had just done a presentation and was wearing a skirt and blouse with a hoodie and I was freezing! I suppose insects are a possibility, but as it was winter, there weren't any out that I noticed, and I'd been there for a couple of days.

(And if anyone is still surprised that I wear skirts and blouses, it's because, yes, I am a woman.)

Never would have guessed December . No heavy coats . I've seen moths active into December up here in Michigan , but that doesn't mean that's what it is . I used to set game cameras up and I'd get some strange things happening with light . I usually believed these were due to lens/light flair or insects . In one old image there is a strong beam of light coming out of the sky and straight onto a group of deer . The deer didn't react to it at all , so I figured it was a camera or lens issue . There are many possibilities .
