What if... (unit)

Defense of Washington...reservist. :D

Seriously though...1st Minnesota, 8th Georgia, Iron Brigade...if I'm taking a bullet, I'm at least taking one alongside some bada**es (self-censored.). ...Not that they all weren't brave. They were.

If I had my choice, I would be in a Missouri State Guard unit - Kelly's Irish Brigade or the 2nd Missouri under Cockrell specifically come to mind.

As far as weapons are concerned, I'd carry whatever shotgun or hunting rifle I brought from home (a Hawken Rifle for example). I'd have to be pretty lucky to be issued a firearm if I didn't bring one along with me.

Its impressive how consistent that is across the board. We see badly drilled units, we see badly equipped units, we see badly lead units - but almost every regiment saw at least one chance to be amazingly brave. The exceptions didn't see any fighting.

And after reading and thinking, I'm going to say that the "Dutch" of 11th Corps darn well deserve to be considered good men. Ill used, but if Barlow's ill deployed and understrength division could make five hundred of Gordon's men casualties at Gettysburg, the men in the ranks had to have been doing something besides running.

Sure, then I got to go home because I bravely and honorably saved D.C. from many invasion attempts.

That naturally raises the question. For those with the choice (not so much the case for Confederates), would you reenlist if still alive and able to fight in 1864? Or is three years enough?

If I had been an actual campaigning fighting unit, once my three years was up, I'd be done. If I survived 3 years of hell on earth, that's my cue to exit stage left before destiny and fate remind me the hard way that they gave me my opportunity to get out alive and I chose not to.
