So on March 4 McClellan is sworn in as President. He calls a ceasefire and offers to negotiate a peace with the Confederacy. What would Jefferson Davis demand as terms for ending the War?
1. McClellan would have to recognize the Confederacy as an independent nation.
2. Union forces would need to depart areas claimed by the Confederacy. But could McClellan really give back Missouri and Kentucky? If McClellan gives up Maryland, then the Union would have to give Washington DC back to Maryland.
3. Would Davis demand Mew Mexico as part of the deal? Also Davais and McClellan would need to discuss other Territories and their status. The Confederacy was looking at Colorado and perhaps part of California. I assume these would be on the table as part of the peace deal.
4. Could McClellan and Davis reach an agreement on returning escaped slaves or at least paying slave owners the cost of their escaped slaves.
5. Was the Confederacy in March of 1865 in a position to demand all the above?
6. If McClellan agreed to all the above, what could McClellan expect in return? In the end it might look like McClellan gave away too much and voters might have been unhappy.
