There is a series of books edited by Robert Cowley in which military historians give "What If" essays.

Among them is "What if the Lost Order Hadn't been Lost", in which Lee marches north unimpeded, goes so far as to burn Harrisburg, then learning that the Federals were now on the way north, decides to take defensive positions near a town called Getttysburg. There McClellan takes a position on Seminary ridge and contemplates how to attack Lee's army ensconsed along Cemetery Ridge, etc. ...

Tom Wicker takes on "What if Lincoln had not freed the slaves?" (No EP).

What If the Northwestern states (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky...) had seceded.

What if Booth's conspirators had also killed Andrew Johnson ....
