History without some sort lesson is just great stories. I am reading The Caning and am struck by the collapse of the political process in the 1850s along sectional lines. I am struck by contemporary parallels and am interested what the denizens of CWT have to say about takeaways from the era, not just the war, but the period 1850 to 1875.
