Here is a link to a video I really enjoyed:

Warning! It's a lecture. But Goughen the professor talks about a war-in-print that broke out during the Civil war between the literati in the Northern US and the literati in England. To make a long story short he says that the aristocrats, capitalists and clergy in England tended to be pro-south while the lower classes tended toward the north. He points out that during the exchange Holmes blasted Dickens for having outrage at chancery courts and heartless schoolmasters but none for the people dying to end slavery. He also takes issue with Tennyson for having a song for the "600" but not a word for the "600,000" (slaves). British writers responded in kind, some even seeing democracy in America as a threat to their aristocratic system. Etc, etc. My question is this: can anyone recommend a book (no Kindle please) or link that would talk about what others in Europe thought of the Civil War at the time? What did the French, Prussians, Russians, and Spanish think? Did Brazil and Chili have anything to say? Did the Chinese care? As I said in my first post I am a beginner (here to learn) and I am interested more in the political than the military. So if anyone can point me to where I can learn more about foreign opinions it would be great! Thanks!!
