Can anyone tell me what kind of coat this officer is wearing?

If I haven't already done so, welcome from Central Ohio. Unfortunately your image does not provide enough detail to make a positive identification of what coat he is wearing although my guess would be a frock coat.

That is what I was thinking too. Thanks!

To me it looks like a frock coat. We I get home I could seen how many inches are between his button holes and how tall his collar is if that would help. The problem being officer coats were made by tailors and do have a variance in measurments.

Okay, thank you.

Most likely a frock. Officers supplied their own uniforms so there's a little variation but typically line officers (lieutenants and captains) wore single breasted frocks. As the war went on many of them chose to wear a plain fatigue blouse in the field so as to not stand out and make a good target.

If I remember correctly the Texas Civil War Museum has a sack coat attributed to Ulysses S Grant that has velvet collars. I don't recall ever seeing any period images of him actually wearing the coat and I'm not sure of the provenance on the coat but it is very likely his. Since officers purchased their own uniforms many variances can be found so it could be possible to find more sack coats with velvet collars. I agree the button spacing does not appear to be for a sack coat but rather a frock coat. The other option would be a junior officer's shell jacket like this one sold at Heritage Auctions:

Again the button spacing is not correct so I am still leaning toward a frock coat.
