Most scool groups did not brave the snow storm so I am a docent at Michigan History Museum with nothing to do.

So who can be the first to ID this shell and tell use what gun it was made for?

I am sure our cannon people will get it right away.

You sure did not want to be beneath the arc of those things. Imagine the shower of flaming bits spraying in all directions!
I would think it was total chaos. I've read some soldiers letters and they describe artillery in horrendous ways. The sound the shells make flying through the air, people being torn to pieces. So much destruction from such a little thing

I based the guess off this. I've never seen one with a papier mache sabot. I guess I've only seen them fired.View attachment 531206
The paper mache' sabot proved to be problematic as it tended to absorb moisture which caused it to swell and made it difficult to load. They may have solved this problem by covering the paper mache' with a varnish coating. When the Confederates copied the Schenkl, they solved this problem (?) by making the sabots of wood. Either one complete with a sabot is a rare bird indeed.
