The only thing that might be of concern with being associated with the Battle at Big Black is the article's reference to being captured "on the retreat," "surrendered without a shot,"and surrendered "with horses, harness, and ammunition complete."
At least as concerns Bowen's artillery within the Bridgehead at Big Black (as referenced in John's post above), they did not have horses and harness as they were removed west of the river prior to the battle. And though Bowen's guns in the bridgehead were all captured, those pieces, obviously, were not taken without a shot and can only loosely be described as being on a "retreat."
Also, if the article was written "about the day after Champion Hill," and then referenced "Yesterday," would put the event on May 16, not 17.
I would look at the artillery abandoned by Loring the night of Champion Hill as being the culprits. That seems to better describe the event, even down to mentioning they were captured "a few miles back on the main road." If you can't find reference to them, let me know and I'll try to find it.
