The Wham Paymaster Robbery of 1889 is the popular name for the theft of $28,000 dollars from the United States Army in Arizona Territory. On May 11, a gang of bandits attacked a small troop of Buffalo Soldiers under the command of Paymaster Major Joseph W. Wham. During the ensuing shootout, the bandits forced the soldiers to retreat and then robbed their wagon. Major Wham was wounded in the engagement along with seven of his men in what became one of the most daring heists of the Old West period.
