In an effort to spark more support for the Western Theater, we have added a section entitled Preservation Opportunities to the Western Theater in the Civil War website that shows the Western Theater battlefields that currently have an American Battlefield Trust "campaign" to save more ground. Please stop by, and even more importantly, make a donation to one of these campaigns!

I had the opportunity to visit the Perryville Battlefield about 15 years ago. The portion of the battlefield that was preserved at that time was administered by the state of Kentucky as the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site. I remember the site was well kept with a walking trail with interpretive signs that told the story of the opening stages of the battle on the Confederate right. IMO the park site was in as pristine shape as Antietam / Sharpsburg. Looking at the current American Battlefield Trust map, I can see that the trust has managed to preserve an area more than double the size of the Kentucky historic site. If they can do the same for other Western Theater battle sites, it will be well worth the investment.

I was at Perryville four years ago during the reenactment, that's a heck of a place! When there I was told of their preservation efforts, on of which was getting all the electrical lines moved out. I got to go there again.

(First picture was taken on Sunday when we reenacted in the same spot as Palmer's GA Battery, which to put it one way, got slaughtered. Reenacting in the same spot was an experience.)

In case anyone is not aware, the Preservation Trust has announced the effort to purchase a large portion of land behind the Railroad Redoubt at Vicksburg. This area will include some of the CS camps in that area. The land has a few small homes on it which will be removed based on my understanding. The details are on their website and this will be a great addition to the Vicksburg battlefield.
