From my engineer series:
The 1st New York Engineers were supplemented in an unusual event by Special Orders No. 353, dated October 6, 1864, calling for the transfer of more than 150 enlisted men to the regiment from the 144th New York Infantry. These men were in excess of the number of soldiers that the 144th could keep on their muster rolls. Additionally when the 144th mustered out on June 25, 1865, those with time remaining on their enlistments were also transferred into the 1st NY engineer ranks.
