Welcome!

My screen name is taken from my gg-grandfather who was a trooper with the 12th PA Cav. I've read Leather and Steel by Larry Maier but continue to be interested in the horse soldiers. He mustered in during the last year of the war and was wounded at some point.s.

Not sure if you were aware of this title about the 12th, published by the University of Tennesse:

A Yankee Horseman in the Shenandoah Valley
The Civil War Letters of John H. Black, Twelfth Pennsylvania Cavalry

Sounds great. I have never been interested in Am Civil War cavalry---seemed too blah compared to massive Napoleonic cavalry charges. But I after I learned my ancestor served and died in the cavalry, I have studied their operations and learned to respect them.
The role of the CW cavalry was many and varied. It is easy to envision how the infantry soldier fought in skirmishes and large battles. It isn't quite so easy for me to understand how the cavalry operated. A cavalry battle in the Eastern theater would look different from a different cavalry unit engaging in the West.
I hope to learn more.
