According to the author, pawpaws were foraged by Civil War soldiers of both side. Pawpaws are the largest fruit native to the US and are described as something like a banana/apple custard... yum! They are most common in the eastern states, particularly Appalachia, along shaded, moist areas like creek and stream banks.

I'm definitely going pawpaw hunting when I'm in Tennessee later this summer!
