Unrecognizable now, in the 1860's the vistas surround Washington DC were the wide, open spaces across undulating, unbelievably lovely landscape. Save some veritable mudholes and swamps which were Washington, DC you could see mile upon mile, unbroken loveliness. It's always a shock seeing era photos of some Civil War encampment then faintly in some far distance the Capitol Dome. Love that!
Spent some time trying to track down era photos of the dome. There are more, fun looking for them. Trying to keep this strictly era, what our ancestors would have seen as it progressed, what met their eyes daily, what part of the war transpired while it soared to completion. Must add which is where too- seem to have lost some descriptions.
Botanical Gardens are visible in the foreground
Done but with the litter of construction, wreathed in black ribbon for Lincoln's death
Just beginning, before the first swearing in of Lincoln's first term
More construction, not exactly what you would expect to see on Capitol grounds
Less completed than the first photo- note ship to the left
Such a cool pic, war raging somewhere, image so peaceful
