On the thread where Pat Young has been posting the Eric Foner course videos there is a poll that asks this question of the students and I thought it might be interesting to see what "we" thought. For reference, the students said: 27% Yes, 42% No, and 22% Don't Know (not sure why it doesn't add up to 100%).

My feeling is that it was certainly not "doomed." It seemed to work for a while but then got caught up in local and national politics and then ran amuk, eventually to be abandoned.

The whole thing with the election of '76 I think led to just letting things go but perhaps after over ten years people also just lost interest. Not really clear about why, in the end, the South was allowed to just pretty much return to their pre-war ways (albeit not as bad as outright slavery).

What do y'all think ?
