Was General George Custer an artist? The G.A.C. at lower right looks like it could be in his hand.

Other than Sibley's, I didn't know other tents would have a heating system - especially like a fireplace.

Was General George Custer an artist?
The short answer is Yes.
He also studied the geology, flora and fauna he encountered, and was a skilled taxidermist.
Throughout his travels, he gathered geological specimens, sending them to the University of Michigan. On September 10, 1873, he wrote his wife, Libbie, "the Indian battles hindered the collecting, while in that immediate region it was unsafe to go far from the command...." <Elizabeth B. Custer, Boots and Saddles, or Life in Dakota With General Custer.(New York: Harper and Brothers, 1885), p. 285.>
