Warren County Confederate Monument

[Buckeye Bill]

The Battle of Front Royal occurred on May 23, 1862. This conflict was part of Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign. General Jackson earned his nickname at the Battle of Manassas Junction but this campaign in the Shenandoah Valley is where he cemented his military legacy. My photo is the Warren County Confederate Monument in downtown Front Royal, Virginia. The Warren County Court House was a witness to heavy street fighting between Union and Confederate forces. The outcome of this battle was a Confederate victory.

What a lovely photograph! Love the Shenandoah Valley, such a scenic area and historic spot for the Valley Champaign. I'd been to Front Royal's beautiful Skyline Caverns years ago! Such a natural wonder.

Front Royal is one of my favorite haunts, at least before the traffic to go there got so bad. Right down the street from the courthouse was "Nick's Diner", you could get a great home cooked breakfast for a great price and the diner had funny comments painted on the side "Eat here or we will both starve." Sadly Nick's was torn down. If you go to Front Royal a side trip to Woodstock tower is well worth a visit. You can see the seven bends of the Shenandoah River there.

I love visiting the Big-Wig American Civil War battlefields (Gettysburg, Shiloh and Vicksburg).

And I love visiting the smaller battlefields (Cedar Creek, Wilson's Creek and Monocracy).

But there is something special about visiting lesser known battlefields (Prairie Grove, Arkansas, Lexington, Missouri and McDowell, Virginia).

Don't get me wrong, I love all of these places.

Just something special about the little places around this country....
