I was at an arms fair the past weekend and a guy had a Warner carbine. Unfortunately it had been polished bright and the stock had been vigorously sanded. A real shame as it was priced fairly good. When I commented about the finish the guy said he had spent a few hours on the buffing wheel last week! Not sure but I may have upset him with my response. Why do people still do this? I didn't buy it, couldn't wait another 150 years for the patina.

Before I realised it was he who had polished it I did say someone had obviously misguidedly polished off 150 years of history. It didn't get heated.

The whole patina thing kills me. I personally only buy brown guns, if it's cleaned, and it's lost all that history, then I'm not interested. Collectors here will say never clean. But look at all sorts of dealers website, and you see armoury bright muskets. They are said to be untouched , never cleaned, hardly used. Or did someone just clean the dang thing! Either way they can go for more money than untouched and uncleaned. It seems to fly in the face of what collectors say, or do collectors really mean what they say? I guess you are free to collect what you want.
