This is a diary entry from Pvt. W. E. Sloan of Co. D. of the 5th Tenn. Cavalry(McKenzie's), Ashby's Brigade, Humes Division of Wheeler's Corp. The info presented is corroborated in numerous other narratives of the men in Ashby's Brigade which lost well over 161 of their roughly 700 men. They were rushed into position at the right of Granbury where the Federals were pouring around the Confederate Right and where Baucum and Lowrey were sent in about an hour later to reinforce these dismounted Cavalrymen.
