CAPT. CHARLES H. BENTLEY
PRESENTATION SWORD PHOTOS (30 PICS)
SERVICE DOCUMENTS PHOTOS (16 PICS)
This sword was presented to Capt. Charles H. Bentley, Co. H., 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry, from his company. Capt. Bentley was Co.E, 16th New York Infantry early in the war, where he reached the rank of 1st Lieut. He was in various battles outlined in the papers. He was then switched over to the 2nd New York Cavalry, and was shot in the arm, just above his right elbow, at the Battle of Campti, Louisiana (where he was 1 of 18 wounded) on April 4, 1864. They eventually amputated the arm, and he later died of his wound in early 1866, on the way to Selma, Alabama, to live at a cotton plantation there (perks of the winning side of the War). There is a full 59-page PDF document of his widow's pension claim. In it, there are various Officers that tell about him getting wounded, and one Officer was with him when he died from that wound. If anyone would like to see it, you can PM me here with your email address, and I will email it to you. Very interesting.

Thank you. I thought this would get a lot more attention as these do not seem overly common. But there are a few on here, I suppose.

I saw it on the fb IASC group but not the Civil War group. I did not have a lot to offer, aside from likely a NYC sold sword.

The CW group on fb shares a lot of presentation swords. British collectors love papered swords (the IASC group). A huge bloc of us though don't have a lot to add and sit in appreciative attention.

Cheers
GC
