Those are some amazing photos. I may have not read it in the descriptions but is the Monitor museum located in Norfolk?

Nearby, in Newport News, across Hampton Roads from Norfolk. (We stayed at the Navy Lodge on post at Naval Station Norfolk; one of the perqs of being married to a retired Marine officer...)

Not this trip... I had a hard enough time convincing the kids to put up with a visit to the cemetery where my grandparents and great-grandparents are buried!

Understood--I had to bribe my 12-year old son with time in the hotel pool just to get him to agree to a couple hours at Hollywood last summer!

I'm fortunate to be married to someone with a similar appreciation for history and the military (even if her focus is different than mine-- she tends towards medieval British and Continental history, but we can both understand the other's fascination). Our kids, not so much; but I hope they're absorbing some of it anyway.

Looks like it was a fantastic trip. Several questions for you or anyone else, since I'm planning a trip all over Virginia in August. How long did you spend you spend at Monticello? Or, how long should I plan on a visit there? I want to make sure I have enough time to enjoy it but I don't want to see everything. Mostly just the house tour and a quick walk of the nearby grounds. Also, how long did you spend at the Mariners Museum in Newport News? I've wanted to see it but not sure if we'll have enough time. Thanks for the tips. Looking forward to my trip in barely a month now.

I think we spent about 3 hours at Monticello. They sell timed tours on their website and you can pre-order tickets and pick them up at will-call if you're on a schedule.

We spent all morning at Mariners and I didn't even get to see half of the museum. Just a reason to return!

That was excellent. I spent 18 months going back and forth to Newport News for work and I am pretty jealous that I never went to the Mariner Museum.

I highly recommend buying timed tickets for Monticello or you may spend hours waiting for your turn to go on a tour especially in the summer.

The Museum Formerly Known As The Museum of the Confederacy... it has a new, more generic name that I can't seem to retain in memory. 'American Museum of the Civil War' or somesuch. It was next to the 'Confederate White House' in Richmond VA when we visited but I'd guess they're in mid-move or have moved to the Tredegar site closer to the river by now.
