Hi all,

Hoping someone can lead me in the right direction of where Confederate soldiers would've been sent if they became POWs? My 2x great grandfather (Leroy Crawford) was a member of the 18th Cavalry or the 62nd Mounted Infantry (Hardy Blues) and I've been sent some documentation that shows he became a POW. I've searched a few lists but am wondering if there are more complete resources to search.

Welcome from Wet Texas!

Here are Leroy Crawford's service cards from the 62nd Mounted Infantry:

And here from the 18th Virginia Cavalry:

These records don't say exactly where and when he was captured, just that he was paroled at Winchester, Virginia on April 25, 1865. Men who've been in the Federal PoW system mostly have cards indicating transfers, where they were held, etc., but Crawford does not. So it's not clear to me that he was held for any length of time, in a formal prison camp. It may be that he was (like Lee's men at Appomattox) still with his unit at the end when it surrendered or was disbanded, was paroled and sent home.

Others with a more detailed knowledge of the 18th Virginia Cavalry may be able to fill in the details.

Andy is right; at the end of the war, all Confederates were considered paroled POWs, even if they had never been sent to a Northern camp.
