Vicksburg battlefield question

Hi,

I recently visited the Vicksburg battlefield and it appeared that there were modern homes (and people living there) inside the battlefield. Are these people
who work at the park? Seems strange that people would be living on a historical site like a battlefield. But what do I know?

Thanks!

I think I know the section you're talking about.

If memory serves me, those are public lands that border the park.
Many decades ago the NPS sold many acres of park land to the City of Vicksburg.
That's also why some of the original markers/monuments are now outside of the park and in suburban neighborhoods.

I'm sure our Vicksburg members can elaborate.

He could referring to the markers that are in peoples front yards that you are talking about as there are many a house with battle markers around the maim park.

Thanks for the answers. The ones I was talking about were to the south of confederate ave. going to the USS Cairo if I remember correctly. I do remember the houses with the battle markers.
