The first inhabitants of the Vicksburg region were the Natchez Indians and their allies. Probably in the mid-1500's Spanish explorers were the first white men to visit the area, they were followed in the 1600's by the French In 1698 Father Davion, a Roman Catholic priest, established a mission on the Yazoo at present day Redwood, Mississippi and named it Saint Pierre. This was the first European settlement in Mississippi.
In 1719 the French established a fort at the mission, Fort Saint-Pierre. On 28 Nov. 1729 the Natchez attacked the fort and surrounding plantations, and the village of Natchez, killing several hundred inhabitants. With the help of the Choctaws, the French defeated the Natchez and their allies, the Yazoos, and drove them from the region.
The Vicksburg region passed into English hands following the French and Indian War in the 1760's. During the American Revolution the area was part of the English colony of West Florida and remained loyal to King George III. In 1780 the Spanish took possession of the colony and in 1790 built Fort Nogales (meaning walnut trees) on the banks of the Mississippi just north of the present site of Vicksburg. The United States took possession of the area in 1798 by treaty and renamed the site Walnut Hills.
Vicksburg was founded in 1811 and named for Newitt Vick, a Methodist minister, who had established a mission at the site. Vicksburg was incorporated on 29 Jan.1825 and as trade grew on the Mississippi Vicksburg grew right along with it becoming an important center of commerce.
