Blockade Runner is one of the better Mainstream Sutlers. Decent tinwear, however I have had a piece or two that was too flimsy to hold up after one event. I do not care at all for the shoes. I like the jean wool uniforms, and the Federal Great Coat, but despise the federal sack coat. Kidney pocket was so small it would not even hold a wallet. Nice folks to deal with. Tents are nice and decently priced. Really with mainstream sutlers such as Blockade runner it is a hit miss thing. Selected items are well made and well priced. I would rather get my uniforms from special people like Mike Watts on facebook. There are plenty of great people out there making top quality gear and good prices, if you are willing to take your time and find them. If there is ONE item to spend the money on and get right the first time it is your shoes. Robert Land, and Mo. Boot and Shoe, I highly recommend. However, I have had a decent bootee from Fall Creek in the past.

As mentioned I prefer not to deal with mainstream sutlers except for a few things now and then. I prefer dealing with people like Hot Dip Tin, Claude Sinclair, Mark Watts, Heather Sheen, Georgenia Kilbourn, and Iron John Logan, all on Facebook.

My impresion is a Artilleryman from West Tennessee. Co.C 1st Tennessee Heavy artillery. I wear homemade wool grey trousers with a red officers stripe down the leg. Butternut sack coat with liner, with red trimming, from C&D Jarnigan. It has some age... My boots are cavalry boots from MB&S. I had a pair of artillery boots from crescent city but a friend of mine wanted to trade because his cavalry boots were to big,my art boots were too small...eachothers boots fit eachother so we traded. My belt is federal with CSA buckle,federal cap box and cartrage box, holter is federal, while on the gun we dontcarry side arms,but most of us do have side arms because there fun to shoot while at camp. I own a '58 Remington [that i hate] and a J.H.Dance & brothers .44. My hat is a hand made gambler stlyle,black felt with ribbon. I have a couple of shirts wich are all checkerd pattern,one with taped pockets,one with no pockets.

I have to seriously tell folk to be real careful about what they buy/order from Jarnagin. They are mostly a main stream vendor, who's clothing in many cases are not up to the quality folk should be interested in. The leather goods coming from them are pretty good, but the last time I looked, MB&S offerings were cheaper.

I was in their store a few years ago, and I almost bought a convex sided tin-drum canteen, but the sling keepers stuck out WAY too much. I looked at a canteen book I have at the house, and sure enough, no original canteen pictured was like what Jarnagin had made up. I had passed on the purchase of the canteen. I will say they did have some nice wool/cotton jean jackets there, but a lot of their other clothing was nothing I could recommend.

Some years back we had a feller join our group, who ordered jean trousers from Jarnagin...he got em in good time, but something looked wrong with the color. We turned em inside out, and the CORRECT side was inside! Dealing with jean (cotton/wool) materialyou get a lighter color inside (look at a pair of blue-jeans, you get the point) than on the outside. Had to do with that 2-1 weave ratio that gives the diagonal look to the weave of the material.
He called Jarnagin and politely complained, and got some flack from a lady about being "one of THOSE kind of guys"!

They had simply turned the material inside out and called it a different color in the catalog. They sent him another pair, and after a bit of corrective stitch work, they have served him well.

We had another guy order one of their British Enfield cartridge boxes, and I must say I liked the quality!

They are a very,hit and miss company. My trousers were made for me,because i have a tough time finding trousers to fit me..im a normal size in he waist,my legs are just too long.. lol but the jarnagans jacket is quite nice. My buddy has a wool frock with jean trousers..both from jarnagins and he is very unsatisfied.The frock is nice,the rousers,not so much... My leathers all came from Dixie gun works...Its actually some very nice pieces. My cap box is museum quality. My cartrage box is pretty decent, and my belt is just wonderful! I have no clue who makes the leathers at dixie,but i recomend them to anyone. How ever,i would like a nice confederate,brown cap box...if any one has a used one they would like to get rid of,let me know..

Hmmmmm...I would tell folk to play it safe and not use Dixie Gun Works for leathers, too many known quality vendors out there you can get a good price on resale if need be. Someone see's you have a MB&S cartridge box for sale, you can make good money on it, something from DGW...as you said, you have no idea who made it.

I agree. My DGW leather is of great quality,and has served me well,and is very accurate reproductions,but resale value is low. Do you know where I can find a good quality brown confederate cap box?

You need to ID a specific, extant cap box and THEN locate a quality maker who makes an authentic duplicate of it. Simply stating a "Brown Cap Box" is FAR too general, and will only lead you down the path of farbdom. Take a look at Echos of Glory, Lords Civil War Encyclopedia and similar photographic reference books of actual items to identify what the soldier you are portraying would have been equipped with specifically.

Most of the leather accouterment makers on my list will be willing to create authentic reproductions of what you are looking for if they don't already offer it.

I know the style im looking for,im just trying to find it,. Ive seen it online before,i just cant remember were. It was brown and had a makers mark on the front of it. yellowish fur strip on the inside with a brass snap.
