I'm sure its been done to death, so let me give my variant.
If the topic was: Top 5 Union Generals who commanded at least at the army level.

Two questions for your consideration:
1) Would Sherman/Grant/Thomas be almost universally agreed upon as being on the list?
2) Does McClellan make this list?

Look forward to reading any responses!

Grant, Sherman, and Thomas of course. Sheridan too. Requiring command of an army eliminates John Reynolds and Joshua Chamberlain. Winfield Scott and George McClellan tie for fifth.

Grant, Sherman, Thomas, Meade. Then it becomes more difficult.

Definitely not Sheridan.

McClellan is under rated but I am not sure he quite makes fifth spot however without more thought I can't think of anyone better... Now if it had been the Winfield Scott of old then I would have gladly voted for him. It wasn't so not him either. Rosecrans? He had his moments but was darned inconsistent. Therefore McClellan by default I guess.
