I recently found Matt Atkinson on YouTube and I've been watching his lectures and battlefield walks. Sharp guy and funny. Of he's stoll working there please let me know as I live two hours away from Gettysburg.

Anyhow I was watching a presentation of Earl Van Dorn. I did know much about him.but something struck me funny and I thought I'd relate it for those who don't know about it.

A discussion over dinner at the beginning of the war lead to a discussion of what the National Anthem should be. Maryland, My Maryland and Dixie were both suggested but Van Dorn was for the 'Liberty Duet' from I Puritana.

Van Dorn began to sing it and Longstreet said they could see him and to 'show yourself'.

He said he wouldn't unless Longstreet did too. So Van Dorn managed to get Old Pete and Gustavus Smith on the table where they sang the song loudly.

I can't speak for Van Dorn or Smith but I had no idea that Longstreet was prone to singing trios.

Y'all probably already know this but I didn't. Great story.
