I am going to be in Kennesaw Georgia April 2nd through the 4th or 5th. I would very much like to visit Cascade Springs and visit the Confederate Earthworks from the Battle of Utoy Creek. I am looking for someone who might have knowledge of the area and of the battle who might be willing to meet with me and accompany me to the Battlefield. I don't know the area well and I understand that it is in a bad neighborhood and I believe that two or three people would be better than one single person. I also want to make sure I can find the earthworks as the area was not overgrown with trees during the battle but is today so I may not be able recognize them without prior experience.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BB,

I am also visiting the Cascade Springs Nature Preserve in April (16th). I had the same questions and they were answered by Lt. Colonel Leonard Bennett, US Army. He resides in the area and he gives personal/group tours on the Battle of Utoy Creek. He is currently on deployment in Afghanistan and could not provide an individual tour. He did email me some resources regarding the area. This is one of the best maps (including the location of earthworks) in the preserve. I hope this helps....

Thank you for the map. I have also been in contact with Lt. Colonel Bennett, the last time, he was just getting ready to be deployed. I sent him an email awhile back and told him that I wanted to visit Cascade Springs and wanted to know if he would be back from his deployment then or if he could offer some advise....he never responded. It looks like from the map that the earthworks are on the eastern side of the nature preserve and on the north end near the parking lot. I might try it even if I can't find someone to go with me.

I would appreciate any other tips Lt. Col. Bennett gave you.

He advised there are two Georgia Historic signs located near the entrance to the nature park on Cascade Road SW. He also told me to visit the site of the old Utoy Church and cemetery on Cahaba Drive.

I am going to enter the preserve and park in the main parking lot. I want to take a photo of Utoy Creek on the western side, then swing over to the eastern side and attempt to locate the earthworks.

* This is not a bad area of town.

Thank you, yes I too want to go over and see the creek. I understand there is a falls their that was present at the time of the Battle.

Knowing it is not a bad part of town makes me feel better...I am not as worried about me but my rental car.

I am doing something similar although i am not going to have much time. I am following one particular unit through the Atlanta Campaign. I'm doing Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Utoy Creek, Atlanta and Peachtree Creek as time permits and maybe Jonesboro if time permits.

Upon your return, can you please advise about locating the Battle of Utoy Creek sites in this preserve?

Make sure you double check what day you're going to Pickett's Mill. They are only open a few days out of the week. I made the mistake of not checking and arrived at a closed park.
