We often hear of the fantastic work the United States Sanitary Commission and they certainly saved the lives of many Union soldiers and eased the suffering of other soldiers. Their medical supplies even aided injured Confederate soldiers who had been captured. We hear less of the Western Sanitary Commission which was a separate organization that was active in the west of the Mississippi River. both organizations sent inspectors to camps to aide in sanitation inspections, provided medical supplies, set up hospitals, and provided nurse. The Western Sanitary commission also well known for their hospital ships. The USSC set up a data base of sick and injured soldiers.

The similar United State Christian Commission was established by the YCMA and performed similar services. The USCC was also well known for providing Bibles and other religious books, and popular magazines. They also were known for providing writing materials and free postage stamps. The Ladies Christian Commotion was part of this organization.
