Named for the "Twin Cities" (Tonawanda and North Tonawanda--there's also a Town of Tonawanda) at the extreme western end of the Erie Canal in New York State, the USS Tonawanda was launched on May 6, 1864 but not commissioned until October 12, 1865, too late for service in the Civil War. It became a training vessel, was renamed as indicated in the caption and was scrapped in 1874. A second ship bearing the original name was commissioned in WWII.

Visual cue for identifying Tonawanda (noted in Paul Silverstone's book) is that her turrets appear to be set closer together than the other members of the class (Miantonomoh, Monadnock, Agamenticus).
