This one's been on my wish list for awhile.

But like my unread "new book" pile and many models still in the box, I better hold off ordering your USS Cairo kit for now.

:whistling:
so you do that too eh?:bounce:(I have a resin and wood model of the Arkansas still in the bos....because i have no idea how to assemble a resin and wood model)
(and I think i got it from Flagship models....caint remember):frantic:

Well, it does look so easy until it arrives . . . and then you open the box.:bounce:

My problem is that I have all of these grandiose ideas about enhancing the kit with various after market accessories.
Real wooden decks, brass cannon & such. Kit bashing if you will.

Then I realize I don't have the required skills ( eyesight, hand/eye coordination, etc. to carry through with it). :D

Resin and WOOD? Not one of mine. If you want some help building resin models, check out my "how to" cds. They'll tell you everything you will want to know. OR, just contact me off board and I'll be happy answer any questions you or anyone else has.

Honestly, building a multi-media kit is not any harder than building a plastic one. You just have to use different techniques constructing it. Anyone who has experience building plastic kits can build a multi-media kit.

You're absolutely right !

Actually I was referring to one of the biggest mistakes a novice modeler makes, - ordering a kit that's beyond their skills.

In my case, it was ordering Iron Shipwright's 1898 USS Brooklyn a few years ago.

Lord knows, I should have ordered a basic ship's launch. :smoke:

About 40 years ago I bought a kit to make a model of the USS Olympia, one of the early battleships of the 1890s. It was beyond my skill level then and now. I finished about half of it, but kept it for about 35 years, vowing to finish it one day. I finally gave up the ghost and threw it all away about five years ago.

It was supposed to look something like this:

It was fun to visit the actual ship, which is on display at the Philadelphia maritime museum. When I visited about 15 years ago, it was in need of a lot restoration work.

One nice thing about that particular model is that there were several vessels in that class, with very minor differences between them. With a few customized additions, that could be made a model of several other gunboats City Class boats.

I found out a couple of years that I've lost my kit modeling skills......used to be pretty good at it but just don't have the chops anymore. So I do them in 3D on the computer or do paintings of them.

USS Cairo you say? here's my 3D version. Where were you when I was looking for source reference for this project..
Excellent job on that kit, I especially like the rigging and the weathering on the deck planks.....well done

One thing that both the model in the OP and Jay's digital model both bring out nicely is how low to the water the "Pook Turtles" really were. The chimneys and other top hamper tend to distract from that, but if you mentally subtract them you end up with something that really does look a lot like a turtle...

I get questions often asking about suggesting a good "beginner" kit that allows the modeler to gain some basic skills to tackle the more complicated ones. I produce several excellent kits in that range.

Wow you are right it definitely isn't one of yours....but after seeing yours I might have to have one....
