I can see three locomotives and part of a fourth !

Have you noticed it's got no windows or ventilation - stores waggon or corpse carrier?

It could have been for hauling medical supplies.

Probably medical stores/supplies. True hospital cars were usually converted from passenger coaches.

Question: Is there an archived list of USMRR equipment- particularly locomotives- giving some information on each of them? Number and name (if any). If new, who built them. If confiscated or contributed by other railroads the names of those roads....

The Railroad & Locomotive Historical Society published an article "The United States Military Railroads" in its journal in the early 1960's, by Charles E. Fisher. It quotes a report made by Col. McCallum, General Manager of the US Military Railroads, written in 1866. The report is over a dozen pages long and includes a listing of the Military RR Locomotives of the Division of the Mississippi. The list gives builder, date received cylinders, driver size, weight where acquired and who sold to after the war. This list, in expanded form, was published as "Descriptive Catalogue of Locomotive Engines belonging to United States Military R. Rds. Div of Mississippi" by General Engine Dispatcher John C. Meginnis.

I did not make a record of where my Meginnis copy came from. I have not been able to find either list in the OR, though there is a lot of info in Series 3.

I understand there is a lot of US QM and RR material in the National Archives. I have spent no time in those areas since I still have so much Confederate work to do, but I'll bet the originals of these documents are there.
