Maybe a surgeon? With the rank of Major? The uniform seems to be a match for these other two who are ID'd as surgeons. I know some people will say no because your subject is carrying a cavalry sabre, but there are other surgeons with cav sabres, including my gg grandfather (on the left in the comparison below)

Hmm, it would be interesting to know if T.F. Saltsman was the photographer. He was located in Nashville. I looked over the background and that's what popped in my mind. I hope you find out who this young man is.

Unfortunately all I was sent was the image of the front side.

Thanks. I'm not even sure if this is a Nashville man or even in the Western armies, but he could be. Saltsman is a Nashville photographer I'm not familiar with. The sender sent it through a 3rd party who knew me and sent no image of the back.

I make him to be about 30, well-educated and from money. Of course to be a surgeon in those days required only some sort of apprenticeship.

The first place my eyes go is the sword and belt plate. The belt plate looks like an US model 1851 eagle sword plate and the sword is an imported cav sword.

Cavalry officer would be my guess, too.
